In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. For regulated nurses and physicians, keeping resuscitation and first-aid skills current is part of an annual competence cycle and is often an employer requirement; for resident attendants and support workers it is built into the qualification for the role. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Nurses in New Brunswick are regulated by the College of Nursing of New Brunswick (CNNB, formerly NANB) and the Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurses (ANBLPN). Nursing standards require registrants to maintain the competencies their practice demands and to be able to act in an emergency. Clinically relevant training such as BLS or CPR can be included in the CCP learning plan, and in hospital and long-term-care settings a current BLS or CPR certificate is generally an employer requirement rather than a licensing condition.

Continuing competence is mandatory but not measured in fixed hours: the annual CCP requires a self-assessment, a learning plan and a mandatory learning module rather than a set number of credits.

For support staff, the Resident Attendant program lists a CPR certificate and an Emergency or Advanced First Aid certificate as graduation requirements, and first-aid certification is generally required of health care aides. A recognized standalone first-aid/CPR certificate is a required component of the qualification for the role; it must be kept current and is renewed on schedule.
